3 QC barangays dengue hotspots

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DoH) Saturday declared three barangays in Quezon City as dengue hotspots after the number of cases, currently at 2,574, continues to rise.
In a text message, National Epidemiology Center Director Eric Tayag said the DoH is currently monitoring Pansol, Fairview, and Payatas after posting increasing number of patients afflicted with dengue fever for two consecutive weeks.
Also declared hotspots were Barangays Vacunero in Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur; Nibaliw, Mabini in Pangasinan; and Lubas and Pico in La Trinidad, Benguet.
Other areas in Metro Manila with high dengue cases are Caloocan, 1,104; Manila, 1,040; Pasig, 804; and Valenzuela, 664.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease, which attacks the blood and could cause fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and eventually lead to death if untreated.
Tayag said the DoH has already advised hospitals in the affected areas to allot express lanes for dengue patients.
“Dengue express lanes should be available in hospitals so that suspected degue patients will be evaluated using a dedicate line,” Tayag said.
The Cavite Provincial Health Office (PHO) has called on the citizens to be extra-cautious during the rainy season when dengue and other diseases are prevalent in the area.
Provincial Epidemiologist Nelson C. Soriano made the call as he reported that the number of dengue cases in Cavite has increased by 40.3 percent during the first seven months of 2011 as compared to the record during the same period last year.
Meanwhile, Malacañang called on the public to continue cleaning the surroundings due to the rise in dengue cases.
Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said the public should never let its guard down and continue to destroy breeding sites of mosquitoes. (With reports from Anthony Giron and JC Bello Ruiz)
